What's Black and White and Re(a)d All Over?




I don't know how long it's been since I've read a print-based newspaper--I get so much of my news online.

So it surprised me when our friends Jeff and Janae said, "Saw your family in the paper today."

What paper? I had no idea.

And immediately I was transported back to first grade--the LAST time I can remember seeing my picture in a newspaper. (That picture featured me and 20 other girls from my Bluebird Troop working on a parade float. A Winnie the Pooh float, to be exact. PS: I think my parents bought 212 copies of that newspaper. They're still stored in the shed at my Great Grandma's house, I'm pretty certain. It was Big Time News back in 1977.)

Anyway, my point!

Jeff and Janae gave me their copy so I could share it with our kids and Dave-man . . .

who were SOOO excited to see themselves in the paper!

There's just something WAY COOL about seeing a photo of yourself on that smudgy black and white printed page.

I think everyone deserves to have their picture in the paper. 

Don't you? 

When I am President that is SO Happening!

PS: The best part of this story is that our "picture" is in the newspaper to share information about adoption and foster care . . . something we are way way proud to be connected with.

PPS: We're missing two of the six kiddos in this shot. Teenagers are hard to pin down for photo opportunities with their parents these days. (Next time, Jay and Bam.)

Is there anything better than time with a book you love? (PS: Jr. loves to read, but I'm pretty sure this scenario was staged. He was teasing me about loving reading more than video games. If we look closely, the book may even be upside down. And it's on Pompei!) Turns out it's always summer when you're a housecat! Bam and Papaya on the kayak at the lake near our home. The running joke between us all: I'd like Janae's family to get a service dog. Janae thinks her hamster fills the bill. "Silver-the-Hamster calms people," she claims....

Survivor 24, A Guinea Pig, And Valentine's '12

Women of Salani tribe. Survivor: One World. (c) CBS, Monty Brinton, 2011. Ahhhh. There's so much to talk about today! First and foremost, tonight is the premiere for Survivor: One World--season 24 , a nd I can't wait--because this season has some great twists.  Redemption Island is gone. The the tribes are separated men vs. women. Hidden Immunity idols have a different "way" of being played (once you find one, it has to be given to someone on the OTHER tribe).  And my most favorite twist: the two tribes are living on ONE beach.  I think the idea of living on the same beach just makes sense, and I would have loved that during our season--because I think it will really help the castaways have a better "read" on ALL of the players. I think  this one twist makes the long game REALLY interesting.  Think of all that Upolu camp life that we/Savaii didn't even know about until the show aired? Brandon and Mikayla? Rocktober

Jr at age 10. We love love love October! It is probably our favorite month. Yup, even though school is in session, October still beats any summer month. Why? Because Utah is beautiful in the fall. AND because there are so many great activities for the kids in October: hay rides to ride, corn mazes to get lost in, donuts and cider to feast on at Janae's (hint hint), spooky movies to watch (we just bought Creature From the Black Lagoon), haunted houses to tour, haunted train rides to take, jack-o-lantern pizzas to eat, carmel apples to make, soups to stew, and breads to bake! And that doesn't even include the costumes and candy! October is just fantastic in my book. So my point! SO LONG SEPTEMBER--don't let the door hit you on your way out. Hellooooooo October! PS: Because our kids are getting older, this year one of my decorations is a corkboard with some of their childhood Halloween photos. It's been a riot to look through them. I can't believe ...
