Young Women In Excellence

The theme for the night was "Let Your Light Shine."
 
Last night our two teenage daughters celebrated the annual "Young Women in Excellence" program at our church. It's a really neat night: each girl shares something she's worked on during the year or a talent she is developing. There are motivational speakers, musical numbers, and of course--true to Mormon-fashion--TREATS!

I know pride is a really wonky emotion, but I did feel really proud of our girls last night. They are both 100 times the young woman I was at their age. I'm really proud of the people they are becoming. They have kind hearts and are great daughters.

And ... I'm super thankful for a program like this that gives them a chance to share their accomplishments.

And so did Lu, Zu, Dave and I ... only we didn't get pix of us all.

Another young woman shared her donation to Locks of Love. Pretty amazing!

And we ended the night with low-calorie refreshments. (Ha!)

Is there anything better than time with a book you love? (PS: Jr. loves to read, but I'm pretty sure this scenario was staged. He was teasing me about loving reading more than video games. If we look closely, the book may even be upside down. And it's on Pompei!) Turns out it's always summer when you're a housecat! Bam and Papaya on the kayak at the lake near our home. (Our community lets us check these out for use. It is so cool.) I love cooking in the summer--tho my pesto was only medium. I haven't mastered the recipe. I love coconuts. (Even after Survivor. Heck, BECAUSE of Survivor.) Bam is probably the most creative person I know. I was never like this as a kid--and I love that she is. Zu went to visit Janae's Service Hamster, Silver. The running joke between us all: I'd like Janae's family to get a service dog. Janae thinks her hamster fills the bill. "Silver-the-Hamster calms people," she claims....

What Are You Doing New Year's ... New Year's Eve?

How do you celebrate the New Year? --A trip to NYC to see the crystal ball drop? --An evening out with friends, dancing the night away? --Dinner at your favorite restaurant? --Movie night? As a mother of 6 kids--ranging in ages 16 to 8--it's been a little difficult for me to plan this New Year's Eve celebration. Dave and I were thinking it would be fun to have a fondue party here at home with our kids. You know, melted chocolate, loud music, maybe some card games? It could be fun. (C) 2010, Bella Lately. But, our teenagers don't really want to spend the last minutes of 2011 with their dad, mom, and younger brothers/sisters. (Can't imagine why? I totally wanted to hang out with my parents when I was 16.) Yet, Dave and I really don't want said-teenagers out on the town at all hours of the night WITHOUT their dad, mom and younger brothers/sisters. (LOL.) Yay! I Live To See Another Day In Survivor Caramoan

(c) CBS, 2012. (And thx SurvivorFever.net)   I am so happy to have made it this far in Survivor Caramoan! As of last night, I beat my placement in Survivor South Pacific (woo hoo!). I thought last night's episode was great. (I think my wording was "huge" at the end of tribal. That was no small feat getting Malcolm out. Holy mack!) I liked last night's episode because we saw a lot more of everyone--and you got a really good picture of what camplife is like (people back and forth sharing plans, voting changes, stress over splitting/not splitting votes, idol searching, bluffing, drinking brown water, heat, tears, diarrhea ... the works!) And while it may seem nuts that I bought a rotisserie chicken for $500.00, it was THE best chicken I've ever eaten. And at this point in the game, I felt I needed food more than I needed family letters or an advantage in a challenge. (But I could have been wrong, been blindsided and easily gone home last night.
