Survivor One World: My Thoughts, Ep 5

(c) CBS, Monty Brinton, 2011.

Did you see that tribe swap? How it turned out?

What the what?

How on earth did Kim, Kat, Sabrina, and Chelsea all land on the same tribe?

This, my friends, is the part of the game that I like to call LUCK.

You see, even though Survivor requires "outwitting, outplaying, and outlasting" ... it also requires LUCK.

Because here's the deal, had Monica landed on Salani last night, she would still be in the game.

Had Jay landed on Manono last night, with Colton/Jonas/Tarzan, Jay might have gone home last night.

Had Kim and Chelsea landed on Manono, and Colton on Salani, Colton might have been sent home last night.

The tribe make-up determines SO MUCH in this game. (Much like real life, the family you are born to--or raised by--really sets a strong course for your success/failure.)

So, with that in mind, here are a few of my thoughts after episode 5 of Survivor One World:

1. The tribe swap could not have been worse for Christina and Monica.
I'm not sure how long Jonas, Leif, and Tarzan will honor Colton's reign, but having them form the majority on Manono hurt Monica and Christina. (Alicia's worked her way into the alliance w/ the men on Manono. Clearly--since she voted Monica out last night.)

2. Why two beaches?
I know it's easier for us as viewers to keep tribes "straight" if they are in different locations, BUT I wanted the ONE WORLD twist to continue.

Maybe it would be impossible to bond with your second tribe if you were still in the same location as your original tribe? (Were producers thinking that separating the tribes would encourage people to abandon their original alliances?)

I'd like to see if that's the case. Now, I'll never know.

3. Is it just me or does Salani have a lot of food?
Keith from my season used to say, "I'm want to be the first survivor to gain weight on the show"--which made me laugh all of the time, because there's just no way you could gain weight out there.

Or so I thought.

Last night's episode showed us that Salani has access to A LOT of food. Holy cow. They won peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, coffee, and sugar in the reward challenge. And then at camp, they have access to chickens, crabs, rice, fishing ... I'm dying!

Believe me, food makes a difference in this game. Hello energy AND team morale. (Don't believe me? Try NOT feeding your family for a day. See how excited they are to climb a wall or play water basketball.)

4. Would you let Tarzan operate on you?
Tarzan is killing me. I don't know if I love him or am annoyed by him? But the bigger question for me is this: would I let Tarzan operate on me after watching him on the show? (He's a plastic surgeon.) I'm gonna go with ... uh, no.

5. Noooooooooo--not Monica!
I feel connected to Monica: she and I kinda cover the same demographic for the show (moms over 40). So of course, I hated to see her leave the game so early. I was looking forward to seeing her in individual immunity challenges. Monica is WAY strong. (If you haven't seen her workouts on YouTube, ya should. Woo.)

That being said, I understand why Colton got rid of her. He's thinking ahead--she was bonded to her original tribe (women) AND she would have been a threat to win long-term (strong, well-liked, etc.).  I'll miss Monica on the show.

One World Cast (c) CBS, Monty Brinton, 2011.

So far, Courtney, Nina, Matt, Bill, and Monica have left the game.
Most likely we'll lose one more person before the merge.
