L-O-V-E That Idea
I love hearing about ways to do better, live better, give better.
Because I think there's something SO fulfilling and exciting about growing and changing.
I like the movement. The change in perspective.
It's exciting to me.
And one of the things I love most about the internet is having this amazing opportunity to learn from other people--because the internet makes it so easy to share ideas.
So today I thought I would share two ideas I learned about this week.
I think they are pretty awesome.
And they both have to do with journals and writing.
LOVE THAT IDEA: #1
1. A Kiddo Journal (idea by Janae and her mom, Louise).
When Janae was a kiddo, her mom encouraged her to keep a journal.
When I told Janae that I didn't remember keeping a journal--or wanting to--until I was a parent, she said, "Oh, my mom made it easy." And then Janae actually showed me one of her kid-Janae journals!
So here's the idea:
Louise (Janae's mom) gave kid-Janae a spiral notebook and would encourage her to draw a picture and write a sentence or blurb--often.
Occasionally, kid-Janae would even get a "journal treat" for doing this. (BTW: big-Janae said the "treat" was a yogurt or other healthy snack. That cracked me up. I think I will have to have Louise guest-post on the blog and tell me how she motivated her kiddos with the promise of "yogurt." That's incredible, no?)
Anyway, I love this idea. And seeing Janae's kid journal was a riot. The journal entry she showed me was a picture she drew, along with a description, of a movie she'd seen: Return of the Jedi.
It was too much!
I'm sure there are studies on the benefits of journaling/reflecting/framing our lives. But I'm telling you, it just makes sense to have our kids record their lives.
It's fun I tell ya!
Particularly when you flashforward 20+ years and see that mom-Janae has a son who LOVES all things Starwars. (Who would have guessed? Smile.)
So, moms--get out there and buy a 79 cent spiral notebook, some plain non-fat yogurt, and get your kids journaling!
LOVE THAT IDEA: #2
2. A couple's journal (idea by Miriam and Tyler).
Our neighbors and friends, Miriam and Tyler, shared this idea at church--and it seems so romantic! (I can't believe I still haven't started it. Today. For sure.)
Anyway, here's the idea:
Miriam and Tyler (who are sweethearts/married) have a single journal that they write in--to one another. It's not a daily journal, but rather one they use at-will. Maybe after a movie, concert, or other special occasion. Or just when they want to record something for their sweetheart.
Once they have written in it, they leave the journal out for the other person to see/read. (That lets ya know there's been an entry--since journals don't beep when new content is added. LOL!)
Isn't that the best idea ever?
Here they have this beautiful way to record their thoughts and love for each other (And Tyler mentioned--no negative, just the positive here. They are like love letters, I'm thinking?)
I think this would also be a neat thing to do for your family or individual kiddos. How great would it be if we all took a few minutes to say, "Hay, I loved spending time with you today. I think you are one "fill-in-the-blank" person!
I love that.
