It's Never Too Late
Okay, so this is going to sound super silly, but I have to write this down (if only for myself)--
It's never too late.
Never too late for what, you ask?
Never too late to change.
Never.
No matter what your life is like or has been like, change is possible.
I know, deep. I'm deep. (OMGoodness that makes me laugh.)
So, how do I know this truth? In other words, what qualifies me to play a Life Coach on GardenGnomesandCherryCola?
Well, here's my story . . .
for the last 30+ years, I have lived a pretty sedentary life. Meaning, I haven't been one for working out and exercising. Sure, I've had brief spells of exercising--a 5K here, a Walk-a-Thon there, using barbells at home for a month or so--but overall, I've not really challenged myself physically.
That is, until this summer, when for some odd reason my brain just locked onto this idea that I was going to push myself physically.
Now, mind you, I've made decisions like this before. Decisions to change my life.
But rarely do they stick.
And yet this time has been different.
I think after my friend Gary passed away I realized in a big way "this is it, baby," and I just really wanted to see what I was made of. (Yes, I'm ending a sentence with "of." Kaya, go tell your 6th grade teacher to call the Grammar Police.)
And you know what?
It's honestly been the craziest thing ever.
You know why?
Well, for two reasons:
1. I had no idea what was inside of me, what I was capable of. (Again with the "of.") All of these years, I've been setting my limits, my bar, so low. I just had no idea what was inside of me. (Do you?)
2. And, because I love metaphors, this experience--of working out/pushing--has been a crazy-powerful metaphor for me.
By working out, I have learned to transform my thoughts and my abilities in one small area of my life. (For example, my old thoughts were, "You can't lift heavy weights. You aren't built for that--you're a girl." But my new thoughts are, "If you have the right training, you can lift even the heaviest of weights. Move over boys!")
So . . .
if I can transform my thoughts and my abilities in one area of my life
I bet I can transform my thoughts and abilities in another area of my life, too.
Right? (Nod your head yes--because that's a yes.)
Oh, I pray this experience is seared in my memory.
Because I'm here to tell you, life is so much more satisfying when we STRETCH ourselves.
So get out there and STRETCH today. Feel the burn, baby. (And remember, this is a metaphor, so I don't mean you have to go lift a 20lb weight. I mean, today's A NEW DAY. A NEW YOU. Get out there and challenge yourself. See what you are capable of--what's inside of ya!)
